    The role of magnetic field for quiescence-outburst models in CVs

    In this paper we present the elementary assumptions of our research on the role of the magnetic field in modelling the quiescence-outbursts cycle in Cataclysmic Variables (CVs). The behaviour of the magnetic field is crucial not only to integrate the disk instability model (Osaki 1974), but also to determine the cause and effect nexus among parameters affecting the behavior of complex systems. On the ground of our interpretation of the results emerging from the literature, we suggest that in models describing DNe outbursts, such as the disk instability model, the secondary instability model (Bath 1973) and the thermonuclear runaway model (Mitrofanov 1978), the role of the magnetic field is at least twofold. On the one hand, it activates a specific dynamic pathway for the accreting matter by channelling it. On the other hand, it could be indirectly responsible for switching a particular outburst modality. In order to represent these two roles of the magnetic field, we need to integrate the disk instability model by looking at the global behaviour of the system under analysis. Stochastic resonance in dynamo models, we believe, is a suitable candidate for accomplishing this task.     Contravariant Boussinesq equations for the simulation of wave transformation, breaking and run-up

    We propose an integral form of the fully non-linear Boussinesq equations in contravariant formulation, in which Christoffel symbols are avoided, in order to simulate wave transformation phenomena, wave breaking and near shore currents in computational domains representing the complex morphology of real coastal regions. The motion equations retain the term related to the approximation to the second order of the vertical vorticity. A new Upwind Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory scheme for the solution of the fully non- linear Boussinesq equations on generalised curvilinear coordinate systems is proposed. The equations are rearranged in order to solve them by a high resolution hybrid finite volume–finite difference scheme. The conservative part of the above-mentioned equations, consisting of the convective terms and the terms related to the free surface elevation, is discretised by a high-order shock- capturing finite volume scheme; dispersive terms and the term related to the approximation to the second order of the vertical vorticity are discretised by a cell-centred finite difference scheme. The shock-capturing method makes it possible to intrinsically model the wave breaking, therefore no additional terms are needed to take into account the breaking related energy dissipation in the surf zone.     Modeling bed evolution using weakly coupled phase-resolving wave model and wave-averaged sediment transport model

    In this paper, we propose a model for the simulation of the bed evolution dynamics in coastal regions characterized by articulated morphologies. An integral form of the fully nonlinear Boussinesq equations in contravariant formulation, in which Christoffel symbols are absent, is proposed in order to simulate hydrodynamic fields from deep water up to just seaward of the surf zones. Breaking wave propagation in the surf zone is simulated by integrating the nonlinear shallow water equations with a high-order shock-capturing scheme. The near-bed instantaneous flow velocity and the intra-wave hydrodynamic quantities are calculated by the momentum equation integrated over the turbulent boundary layer. The bed evolution dynamics is calculated starting from the contravariant formulation of the advection-diffusion equation for the suspended sediment concentration in which the advective sediment transport terms are formulated according to a quasi-three-dimensional approach, and taking into account the contribution given by the spatial variation of the bed load transport. The model is validated against several tests by comparing numerical results with experimental data. The ability of the proposed model to represent the sediment transport phenomena in a morphologically articulated coastal region is verified by numerically simulating the long-term bed evolution in the coastal region opposite Pescara harbor (in Italy) and comparing numerical results with the field data

    Genome-wide analysis of 30 -untranslated regions supports the existence of post-transcriptional regulons controlling gene expression in trypanosomes

    In eukaryotic cells, a group of messenger ribonucleic acids (mRNAs) encoding functionally interrelated proteins together with the trans-acting factors that coordinately modulate their expression is termed a post-transcriptional regulon, due to their partial analogy to a prokaryotic polycistron. This mRNA clustering is organized by sequence-specific RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) that bind cis-regulatory elements in the noncoding regions of genes, and mediates the synchronized control of their fate. These recognition motifs are often characterized by conserved sequences and/or RNA structures, and it is likely that various classes of cis-elements remain undiscovered. Current evidence suggests that RNA regulons govern gene expression in trypanosomes, unicellular parasites which mainly use post-transcriptional mechanisms to control protein synthesis. In this study, we used motif discovery tools to test whether groups of functionally related trypanosomatid genes contain a common cis-regulatory element. We obtained conserved structured RNA motifs statistically enriched in the noncoding region of 38 out of 53 groups of metabolically related transcripts in comparison with a random control. These motifs have a hairpin loop structure, a preferred sense orientation and are located in close proximity to the open reading frames. We found that 15 out of these 38 groups represent unique motifs in which most 30 -UTR signature elements were group-specific. Two extensively studied Trypanosoma cruzi RBPs, TcUBP1 and TcRBP3 were found associated with a few candidate RNA regulons. Interestingly, 13 motifs showed a strong correlation with clusters of developmentally co-expressed genes and six RNA elements were enriched in gene clusters affected after hyperosmotic stress. Here we report a systematic genome-wide in silico screen to search for novel RNA-binding sites in transcripts, and describe an organized network of several coordinately regulated cohorts of mRNAs in T. cruzi. Moreover, we found that structured RNA elements are also conserved in other human pathogens. These results support a model of regulation of gene expression by multiple post-transcriptional regulons in trypanosomes.Fil: de Gaudenzi, Javier Gerardo.     Manuais de Ginecologia Natural: associações, tensões e construção das concepções de saúde e cuidado no século XXI

    The aim is to understand the notions of health-illness, care, self-care, and therapy present in publications with wide circulation in discussion spaces on women's health. It results from documentary research with analysis of three Natural Gynecology manuals, focusing on the concepts of health-disease, care and therapy, seeking to understand the dialectical-hermeneutic dimension of the discourses presented. From the content analysis, three categories emerged: Tension between biomedical and ancestral knowledge in women's health, Care and therapeutic practices and Perception of the menstrual cycle and self-care. The promotion of autonomy and care was identified through the dissemination of the perception of the menstrual cycle and information about female health as the main unifying elements of the discourses. The therapeutic practices presented are centered on self-care and have unconventional characteristics, despite being based on advances in biomedicine. As results, we identified the diversity of epistemological and therapeutic sources of these movements, from popular practices to practices established by clinical medicine. The manuals analyzed appear as devices for discursive dissemination and epistemological dispute about women's health, autonomy and care.Objetiva-se compreender as noções de saúde-doença, cuidado, autocuidado e terapêutica presentes em publicações de ampla circulação nos espaços de discussão sobre saúde da mulher. Resulta de pesquisa documental com análise de três manuais de Ginecologia Natural, com foco nas concepções de saúde-doença, cuidado e terapêutica, buscando compreender a dimensão dialética-hermenêutica dos discursos apresentados. A partir da análise do conteúdo, surgiram três categorias: Tensão entre saberes biomédicos e ancestrais na saúde da mulher, Cuidado e práticas terapêuticas e Percepção do ciclo menstrual e autocuidado. Identificou-se a promoção da autonomia e do cuidado através da difusão da percepção do ciclo menstrual e de informações sobre a saúde feminina como principais elementos unificadores dos discursos. As práticas terapêuticas apresentadas são centradas no autocuidado e tem características pouco convencionais, apesar de apoiarem-se nos avanços da biomedicina. Como resultados identificamos a diversidade de fontes epistemológicas e terapêuticas desses movimentos, desde práticas populares a práticas estabelecidas pela medicina clínica.     Exchange coupling inversion in a high-spin organic triradical molecule

    The magnetic properties of a nanoscale system are inextricably linked to its local environment. In ad-atoms on surfaces and inorganic layered structures the exchange interactions result from the relative lattice positions, layer thicknesses and other environmental parameters. Here, we report on a sample-dependent sign inversion of the magnetic exchange coupling between the three unpaired spins of an organic triradical molecule embedded in a three-terminal device. This ferro-to-antiferromagnetic transition is due to structural distortions and results in a high-to-low spin ground state change in a molecule traditionally considered to be a robust high-spin quartet. Moreover, the flexibility of the molecule yields an in-situ electric tunability of the exchange coupling via the gate electrode. These findings open a route to the controlled reversal of the magnetic states in organic molecule-based nanodevices by mechanical means, electrical gating or chemical tailoring

    Superconducting molybdenum-rhenium electrodes for single-molecule transport studies

    We demonstrate that electronic transport through single molecules or molecular ensembles, commonly based on gold (Au) electrodes, can be extended to superconducting electrodes by combining gold with molybdenum-rhenium (MoRe). This combination induces proximity-effect superconductivity in the gold to temperatures of at least 4.6 Kelvin and magnetic fields of 6 Tesla, improving on previously reported aluminum based superconducting nanojunctions. As a proof of concept, we show three-terminal superconductive transport measurements through an individual Fe4_4 single-molecule magnet.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
